URGENT – VENEZUELA

HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS, ACTIVISTS AND PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV ARE PERSECUTED AND DETAINED

The International Council of AIDS Service Organizations (ICASO) and the Global Network of People Living with HIV (GNP+) denounce the escalation of threats, persecutions and arrests of human rights defenders and activists living with HIV in Venezuela, a situation that threatens the physical integrity and freedom of our partners and prevents them for doing their work benefiting people living with HIV in the country.
We urgently call on the international community, United Nations system and humanitarian institutions operating in Venezuela to prioritize the protection of those leaders who are monitoring the delivery of antiretrovirals, ensuring that they reach people living with HIV, including those under the umbrella of the Venezuelan Network of People with HIV (RVG+), ACCSI, Mavid Foundation and other related organizations.
We demand that those responsible within the government of Venezuela, including the executive branch, security, intelligence and paramilitaries forces cease their harassment against these colleagues, as well as offer the required guarantees so that civil society and communities can continue monitoring the distribution of medicines and supplies donated to the country, as established by Venezuelan laws and international human rights agreements subscribed by Venezuela.
